The electric wheelchairs that are safe and easy to use and are comfortable for people with disabilities made Update: 25-04-2019
With the desire to create a wheelchair that is safe and easy to use and are comfortable and effective for disabled people, a group of students from Department of Mechatronics, Lac Hong University including Le Trong Dai, Phan Nhu Quan, Le Thi Trinh, Vo Quang Thu, Tran Minh Tung and Le Quoc Huong have studied and designed a complete electric wheelchair with a lot of functions to help disabled and old people in daily-life activities.

The complete electric wheelchair

Talking about the idea of making this vehicle, student Le Trong Dai, a member of the research team, said: “In 2017, from an article of a child in district 5, Ho Chi Minh city, who cannot walk due to his glass bone disease and who always dream of having an electric wheelchair to move easily, we have joined hands in studying and making an electric wheelchair with the desire to contribute to realizing this dream and bringing joy and happiness to the child with glass bone disease”.

Le Trong Dai said, besides the group’s working and learning time they started to meet and discuss ideas and plans and assign each person’s task like searching for materials and purchasing good accessories and devices in the country whenever they had free time regardless of daytime or evening time. It took them nearly 1 year to complete the electric wheelchair for disabled people after numerous times of fixing and adjusting the wheelchair’s structure according to users’ needs.

This vehicle’s design focuses on its movement and control algorithms to ensure the factors of safety, easy use, comfort and efficiency. Also, it is studied and designed in accordance with the stature of Vietnamese people and the parts of the vehicle can be disassembled, assembled and its structure can be changed to suit each user’s different needs.

The wheelchair can be under multi-directional control and its main movements are just controlled with the handle of Joystick or smartphones. The vehicle is integrated with a reclining mechanism (a reclining angle up to 650 degrees) and a raised footrest (up to 700 degrees), giving users a comfortable way to move and rest. The seat is designed to open and close the potty and increase its convenience and with its toilet function users can completely go to the toilet right on the vehicle easily without others’ help, Le Trong Dai said.

The group of authors received the first runner-up prize at the Dong Nai Technical Innovation Contest in 2018

The vehicle has the ability to go over a terrain with a slope of up to 300 degrees and is capable of traveling on roads with a load of about 130 kg and a stable travel speed of 7 km per hour. In particular, the great feature of the vehicle compared to other electric wheelchairs on the market is the integration of many technologies such as an integrated HMI touch screen to control all functions like falling and going to the toilet, which allows users to easily set and display the parameters of the vehicle’s speed, status, and so on. Also, thanks to the application of positioning devices and module SIM, users can seek for relatives’ help as they have problems. In contrast, their relatives can monitor the position and condition of the vehicle whenever and wherever.

The wheelchair uses the details, structure, and materials that are available in Vietnam, so the price is lower than the version of wheelchairs with equivalent functions in the market. Currently, the price of an electric car with equivalent function in the market ranges from over VND100 million to VND200 million, but the wheelchair designed and manufactured by the group only costs about VND30 million to VND40 million.

Talking about the development direction of the product, Le Trong Dai said, thanks to the available premise the product can be completely upgraded as well as integrated with technological devices to control such as a brain wave or voice control unit or with creational devices and physiotherapy support devices for users.

The groups’ solution of the electric wheelchair for disabled people won the first runner-up prize at the Dong Nai Technical Innovation Contest 2018.
