Science, technology, innovation and creativity creates future Update: 11-04-2019

Vietnam Science and Technology Day is held on May 18 every year. This is a great day for the country’s Science and Technology to widely disseminate scientific and technological achievements, honor people doing scientific research and developing technology, and raise the social awareness of the important role of science and technology in life and in the country’s development as well, thereby stimulating all classes of people’s spirit of and passion for scientific research and promoting their innovation and creativity, especially those of students and helping to form a high-quality workforce in the field of science and technology sectors and contribute to the national construction and development.


May 18 is chosen as Vietnam Science and Technology Day as this day is associated with a historical event. Particularly, on May 18, 1963 President Ho Chi Minh attended and delivered a speech at the first Congress of the Vietnam Association of Science and Technology Dissemination, saying “Science must come from production and return to serve production and masses to increase labor productivity, constantly improve people’s lives, and ensure the victory of socialism”. In President Ho Chi Minh’s above-mentioned brief words, he pointed out the noble principles, goals and missions of Science and Technology, and his words have become the guidelines for Vietnam’s science and technology throughout the national journey of protection and construction for more than 50 years.


Exactly half a century later, the 13th National Assembly passed the amended Law on Science and Technology in 2013 with greatly innovative contents at the 5th working session on June 18, 2013. The Article 7 of the Law on Science and Technology in 2013 stipulates: “May 18 every year is Vietnam Science and Technology Day”.


In order for the activities to celebrate the Vietnam Science and Technology Day in 2019 to be organized in a uniform, efficient and practical manner, the Ministry of Science and Technology has issued official letters to guide ministries, sectors, localities and agencies how to organize the Science and Technology Day with such key contents as organizing activities of propaganda information; disseminating the Law on Science and Technology, the role of science and technology, and science and technology activities; initiating the movement to do scientific research and promote technical innovations among researchers, students and people from all walks of life; launch the movements to improve quality and productivity in enterprises; reward or ask levels of authorities to reward the outstanding collectives and individuals, who have made great contributions to the development of science and technology of ministries, sectors, localities and agencies on the occasion of Vietnam Science and Technology Day.


During the key week to celebrate Vietnam Science and Technology Day from May 14 to 19, 2019, scientific conferences, seminars, meetings, and exchanges among the managers of science and technology, scientists, students, and inventors in ​​provinces and cities will be held and exhibitions to display or introduce Vietnam’s Science and Technology achievements will also be organized.


Particularly, Ministry of Science and Technology will organize such activities as a high-level forum on the role of intellectual property in socio-economic development; Ta Quang Buu Awards Ceremony; the Science and Technology Press Awards 2018; the Innovation and Creativity Week between the Ministry of Science and Technology and its partners from Australia from May 13 – 17, 2019; Workshop on the Application of Science and Technology in the field of Sports; International Conference on Robots; and so on.
